“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”  This is the event we anticipate and the truth we celebrate at Advent:  The abstraction of the eternal, unseen God incarnating himself, becoming concrete, in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.  Throughout his earthly ministry Jesus gave witness to this truth by using concrete, and sometimes very earthy, metaphors to get across his point.  John, who starts his Gospel with the line quoted above, also is the writer who reports these teachings of Jesus.  We call them his “I Am” sayings and this Advent we will be exploring some of these metaphors and what they have to tell us about what it looks like to be Jesus’ followers today.
