Jeremiah is often referred to as “The Weeping Prophet.”  Grief colors much of what he had to say.  As he stands in the gap between God and Israel and listens for and gives witness to the word of God, he occupies that inevitable and unenviable space between the rock and the hard place.  He delivers the message that God gives him and that his people do not want to hear.  Thus, his name itself has become a descriptor of a particular kind of oratory.  A jeremiad is the mournful and cautionary cry of a prophet. Over the next eight weeks we’ll scratch the surface of this prophet’s prayers to God and proclamations to his people.  We will stand with Jeremiah in that gap and learn a bit about how to accept the circumstances of our own exile and live honorably among those who those who do not share our take on the truth.
