The seasons of Advent and Epiphany provide a context for us to live into the ongoing interplay between promise and fulfillment that characterizes our spiritual life. We are constantly living in both anticipation of and thanksgiving for the work of God. Isaiah 40 – 55 is a playlist that accompanies our journey. This ancient prophet offered these songs to his people as they were anticipating the end of their exile and restoration to their former home. They are lyrics sung “between the times.” They are melodies that remind us of God’s presence and that invite us to rejoice. They bring tidings of comfort and joy and so provide a resource that helps us to remain faithful as we walk on the way of Jesus.
